I feel like I re-invented some old fantasy illustration style....not my favorite out of my works haha

In one story/idea of mine boy is raised by clan of forest imps. I decided to sketch some idea what they might look like, and based on that sketch I painted this.

ps. it's a puzzle here but the real one's not.

My favorite game series and long time fandom celebrates its 25th anniversary in Februrary 21st, and even though I participate in another secret as well, I wanted to draw something of my own.

I also drew the lineart with tablet for the first time in AGES. I hate drawing linearts in photoshop, but then I found this beautiful program called Paint Tool Sai, which is very friendly for my hands and has great default collection of different brushes. And also this vector-painting tool, which was great for drawing Hylian Shield decorations for example.

If I counted right, it has exactly 25 characters in it! I tried to include at least one character from each game in the series. I'll hope to submit the ready version at the Feb 21st.

Some suggestion for the coloring style would be nice too, whether I should keep it simple with cell-shading, or make it digitally painted?

I'm not particularly fan of illustrator works, since they tend to be to clean and tidy to my tastes, and I guess it's even worse when people do illustrations in Illustrator, and slap some fake vector brushes and textures to it...but I appreciate them when they're well done (it's just that I'm such an oldschool traditional medium fan that I make all kinda excuses, sorry)! Simple designs tend to look better to my eye, when it's about Illustrator.

Manga Café mascot suggestions

Currently one of its kind café in Finland, Manga Café, is holding a competition for sort of new mascot or website emblem (or well, the site claims vaguely it's a 'logo design' competition which it isn't if they're asking for a drawing). What I made was for my own enjoyment and illustrator practice (I almost like you, illu. ALMOST) but I thought that why not, I'll suggest it for them even though it's very different from their current 'look': http://mangacafe.fi/

Aand frankly imagining how I could improve their look it got kind of out of hand in my head!

I even started sketching an actual logo for them (drawing is not a logo, dammit! NEITHER IS THAT PAPYRUS-LIKE FONT THEY GOT GOING) and even at the risk of sounding like a complete douche, I sent them email where I told I could help improving their image for free, as kind of a project. It's also kind of stupid of me to suggest something like that, since I'm just a student and I have never designed a complete logo or identity for anyone, but I'll never learn if I don't do things I guess!

first attempt in typeface design-post

We had this 4 days workshop course where we had to design typeface (or well, just few letters because UHH FOUR DAYS) from handwritten text. My results are not very good, but I hardly ever feel pride of my schoolwork anyway. However, handwritten text isn't half-bad!

Next step was to scan it and start vectoring in Fontlab Studio. I admit, it's kind of fun. But it's easy to lose sight when you start adding ends to the letters and varying the original form. The idea wasn't to design very modern font what comes to form, more like classic antique like Garamond.

We were told that it would be perfectly ok if we managed to just design N, O, V and A so that they'd look good but...I guess I got confused about the information and well, I worked with n-o-v-a for longer than the others and to me it shows since they look more fat than the other letters. GAAH. What comes to A though it looks kind of ridiculous with that tail. Last moment adds haha. At least, for some reason, since this is rather silly looking by default, I like how it looks when used in this poetic text I made up in last 15 minutes.

So school began, and I'm trying to catch up on ignoring my sketchbook filling. I ended up drawing something every day, we only had lectures this week.

day one

Gryphons moving to south. I was feeling the autumn, first day at school and I was so happy to be there. And also, patient enough to scribble with pencil like that. Figured out that a white permanent ink pen makes up cool effect with plain HB pencil, it gets dirty though but I kind of don't care heh.

day two

I think I happened to say 'horses are so hard to draw' and my classmate said it's okay as long as you don't have reference it's still easy to make it look like horse-ish. So I didn't worry too much. Mane started looking like arms for some reason and I instantly figured it's gotta be a possessed horse, or ghost.

day three

I don't draw a lot of my characters...this summer I've been brainstorming with ideas for comics and really really wanted to draw something, especially my new character Harriet, a girl who's lost her fiancé.

day four

At this point I was getting really tired. I don't sleep nearly enough and I'm high on caffeine almost all the time haha. But, it's a mermaid. Or more like a drowned woman who's turning into a fish. I wanted to draw guts drooping from her abdomen as well but I couldn't come up with pleasing composure. Oh well. Pretty-ugly!

day five

My buddy Emma aka miss Kantanen http://kantanen.deviantart.com always draws really fancy detailed mechanical things, like crazy neurotic detailed stuff and I was sitting next to her. I borrowed her mechanical pencil since I forgot my sharpener again and I guess it just resulted in trying out drawing detailed mechanical creature. I'm not good at it, mechanical things that is. They always turn out very organic.

I want show off some process photos of the picture I made yesterday, it was commissioned by Serain at deviantart. A3 sized, it was sold with 40$.

It's pretty great that I can see the sunlight fading and in the end, I had to put on lamp.

I've probably never recorded my painting processes before. Now that it's done, it feels pretty good! Couple of people have asked me at dA to make a painting tutorial, or then they'd ask what kind of paper, brushes and colors I use. I never thought of making any real tutorial, because there's plenty more amazing painters than myself even among my friends and acquiantances (for example, check Riikka or Cynthia ) and I feel all too amateurish to start explaining how to work with watercolors or gouache.

This is where I work. I might cry one day, when I spill water on the keyboard.

The original sketch is made on cheaper paper, which I then traced to the fine watercolorpaper. I don't usually dare to sketch on watercolorpaper, because it's bit pricey, and erasing affects the paper texture.

Presenting the materials. Paper is the most expensive one out of these.

I treat my watercolors so terribly, I'm sorry ahah. If you're like me, I recommend buying cheap watercolors, mine cost about 10 euros at local bookstore, they last long and I don't sweat for abusing them. They're actually not aquarelles, but gouache/watercolors, reads on the label. White gets consumed so fast I bought extra. I also have these fine Winsor & Newton watercolors which normally cost pretty much, but I snatched them from special offer, even then they cost over 20 euros. They're really nice, color is strong and lasting. I only have the most basic colors inside though, if I had the money I could buy lot more color cubes to fill in, but I'm doing fine with what I have for now.

I guess I should paint something with that sad green and damned cobalt blue, I wonder what's with that hue, it never seems to fit anything :D

After longest time at livejournal, I decided to move over to blogspot with my drawings. I suppose I feel more comfortable, not using lj-cuts and wondering if I make someone's friendpage flood.
